Tidy My Office: Alexander Outland

HOOK ME UP! EXCLUSIVE CONTEST

TIDY MY OFFICE!
BONUS WEEK -- Alexander Outland: Space Pirate

It's time to tidy my office, and I need filing space. To that end, I'm giving away my edited galleys -- the hard copies that have my scribbles on them. There's only one of each book, so these are extremely rare, one-of-a-kind items.

The contest will run weekly for 7 weeks, and cover the first 6 books in the Alien series and Alexander Outland: Space Pirate by G.J. Koch.

The contest for the Alexander Outland: Space Pirate edited galley will run from Tuesday, February 16, 2013 through Monday, March 4, 2013. Any contest entries received for AO:SP after 3-04 will not qualify.

So, registered Hook Me Uppers!, answer this question: If you had a spaceship, what would you name it?

Love, Gini

This is for Hook Me Up! subscribers only, so if you're not on, now's the time. Send an email with "Hook Me Up!" in the subject line to gini@ginikoch.com and I'll send you the rules to enter.

Contest will run weekly from Tuesday, January 15, 2013 through Monday, March 4, 2013 (TBAA runs 01-15-13 to 01-21-13; AT runs 01-22-13 to 01-28-13; AitF runs 01-29-13 to 02-04-13; AP runs 02-05-13 to 02-11-13; AD runs 02-12-13 to 02-18-13; AvA runs 02-19-13 to 02-25-13, and AO:SP runs 02-16-13 to 03-04-13). Each galley's contest will run for a week -- winners will be announced sometime in the week following each galley's  entry close. Winners will have until the following Sunday to check in -- any galley not claimed by then will be pulled back by the Gods of Random and a new winner(s) will be chosen.

This an international contest -- as long as you're on Planet Earth, you can enter and win. You must have a deliverable address, though - no P.O. boxes. Prize may take 2-4 weeks to ship; it may take 6-8 weeks for international or longer. Prizes will NOT ship until the final contest week close, on the off chance someone manages to win more than one galley (yes, it's possible, because, as we know, the Gods of Random are capricious).

Oh man! That would be a toughy. Knowing me I would possibly end up naming her "The Morrighan" after my favorite Celtic Goddess.

Morrighan was a bad-ass goddess, one who inspired bloodlust and fighting. So could you just see that... black and red in her honor, ready to instill fear into aliens.

I have a question, which may seem (is) totally unrelated. When are you going to either write another installment of Creation Agent OR turn it into a book? I love it, you have me hook and have left me hanging for MONTHS. Please throw me a bone and at least let me know when there will be more to that story.

Thanks!!

Well, this one's just too easy for words. Don't even have to think about it. I'd call it Steely Dan...with exactly the same reasoning that Fagen and Becker used!

Naming ships has always been hard. It depends on how the chip feels. But my fav name is Children At Play. So that is what I would name it!

I would call it The I'm Outta Here.

Mine is simple, straight from lewis carrol writing. My ship is the "Esquadrille" - A stately waltz if one uses the prcise definition of the word. My Esquadrille stately waltzes through space. A spacer fantasy luxury cruiser with a bit of a Tango bite. A ship with a gun that should be on a battle cruiser but mostly for a look. A look of hazardous, but don't look close even if it is pretty.

This Sola for some reason I can't post under my name.

It is a silly name for a spaceship but the very first thing that poppedi myhad is.....Mild-May-Your-Sufferings-Be-At-The-Hands-Of-The-Wicked. I have no idea how my brain connects Mildmay the Fox to a spaceship but I guess it does.

I am enjoying all the names thus far. Another name that came unbidden to the mind is "Luck's Bane"

I'm a big fan of functionality and I'm known for being just a tad literal minded, especially when it comes to naming things. For example, in 2007 I caught a budgie in my back yard. I couldn't let it succumb to our climate. Six years later, I still haven't thought of a better name than "Bird." Sometimes it has one of an assortment of impolite adjectives, though.

Anyway, if I pay over a grand for something, I think I have a right to name it. Unlike the way I name my children, characters, and alter egos, I figure I shouldn't settle for the first thing that pops into my head. After all, I put money on the line for it.

I expect to be spending a great deal of time in this spaceship--it IS a spaceship, right? It's not like it's a crosstown bus. At the very least, I hope it will smell better.

I want this thing to be comfortable. And comfortING. It will be my home-running-away-from-home. It will be my inner sanctum, my oasis, my fuzzy blankie. By the time I get it, though, everyone in the known universe will already have one. Registering a name will be like naming a purebred dog: What's on a paper will be long, unique, unwieldy, unlikely, and possibly slightly pretentious. It will reflect the heritage and style of its owner. What I actually *call* it will be much more friendly and familiar.

Being a proud Canadian and wanting to reflect comfort and utility in my ship's name, I will register her as the following:

The Double-Double Poutine Chesterfield.

For short, she will be "The Chesterfield."

Her informal nickname will be "The Big Comfy Couch."

She will be the humblest ship in the galaxy. And you will remove your shoes when you enter, because this is a Canadian household, after all. Sorry about that.

Hmmmm....really good question,
I think i'd have to name it the Chaos Express, since it would be transporting me, Countess Chaos, and my hubby the Count around on our many adventures.

At this moment, beacouse of the book I'm reading, I'm tempted to name my spaceship "Berserker" because he can't be anything else than a Mighty Nordic Warrior :)

And when I think about it, all names come from litterature, I also like "El Pistolero" and "Khalessi" (if it's a girl ^^)

@Adrian in Phoenix - Ya know, if you're going for Maxwell, it should be for Maxwell's Silver Hammer. As in, "came down upon his head."

@Lisa954 - The tenth shot of Jack Daniels rolls right off your tongue, too. Not to mention right onto your shirt. You don't see me naming any spaceships after it, though.

Of course after the tenth shot, I'm not naming much of anything, anyway. It's kinda like "One Tequila, Two Tequila, Three Tequila, Floor."

By the time I get to the fourth tequila, I have acquired powers of invisibility (the first three shots make me attractive, smart, and funny). In other words, it's a liquid cloaking device.

@me - They don't let us drink, here in The Home, but the last time I had those ten shots of Jack Daniels there was a strange little incident. I went to brush something off my shoulder, and it was the floor.

@Jesse - I tried once. Got caught. Seems the Head Nurse wanted to know why I had olives in my 'water' glass. It's the little details that get you every time.

I would have to name my spaceship Hovno Mluvčí because I like the name and it sounds so much more polite when you write/say it in Czech. :)

@Ratkin: why not just not have olives? I mean, it would still taste good...

@Jessie - Olives are hideous, salty things unless they're properly marinated.

How about simply "V" as in vector, vixen, victorious, etc.?

(Or Vile, as in my vile "smartphone" won't let me update these comments.)

Just run down to Kinko's and make us all a copy ;-)

@Adrian in Phoenix - My pleasure. It's not like I'm overloaded with other things to do, here in The Home!

This makes it like the AKC name for a pedigreed dog as opposed to its 'call name.' "Yes, his AKC name is Satan's Master of the Dark Forces. We call him Fluffy."
