Return of the Rant

Happy Friday! Just a short one today. And yes, for those who've been following me a really long time, it's true -- It's Time for a Rant is back.

As mentioned and promised on Wednesday, there's been a lot of brouhaha going on and going down over a variety of things related to SFWA and scalemail bikinis and more. My views on this are now live over at both Slice of SciFi and It's Comic Book Day, replacing this month's review column.

Comments welcomed and encouraged at both sites -- the editors really appreciate knowing that articles get read, etc., and we'd all like to hear your thoughts on the subject.

That's it! Have fabulous weekends and let's be readers of whatever we want out there. Peace out, my li'l gangstas, and I'll catch you on the flip side!

Love,
Gini

Readers enjoy good stories regardless of who writes them.
Authors should be promoting reading, and in this case SciFi because as the pie gets bigger, everyone’s slice can get bigger.
It is the 21st century – we should be over sexism by now ….

Thanks, Adrian! I agree. It's a pity that we're not over most of our isms, but as long as we make strides every day, we'll get there.

Hi Gini,

Late to the party, as usual...
I read your post over at Slice of Sci Fi and I agree with your position wholeheartedly, and thank you and everyone like you who is a) writing fun stuff to read and b) speaking out against this nonsense.
I have a question though [dons cast iron cup and running shoes]...
What exactly is the Galaxy Quest boobs question?

Hey Paul, we welcome you with open arms and a hot toddy or a nice mojito whenever you arrive!

In Galaxy Quest terms, instead of talking about her role on the show, the TV Guide interview talks instead about how hot Gwen looks in her uniform. They're not speaking to her about her craft or her character's impact. They marginalize her into the role of sex object.

So, what I mean by the Galaxy Quest Boobs Question is any time someone (almost always male) is asking me about something that has nothing to do with my work. As in, "Hey, you're the only female on this panel, so instead of asking you about your books or your characters or anything else about writing, I'm going to ask you about being the only girl on this panel." Sometimes the question gets phrased so that it appears that I'm on the panel to defend women being funny or defend women writing SF/F/H (and that's usually how it gets set up -- I have to defend my right to be there, versus getting to talk about the books that got me there), but it's still the GQBQ and it still pisses me off when it happens.
