Tidy My Office: Alien Proliferation

HOOK ME UP! EXCLUSIVE CONTEST

TIDY MY OFFICE!
WEEK FOUR: Alien Proliferation

It's time to tidy my office, and I need filing space. To that end, I'm giving away my edited galleys -- the hard copies that have my scribbles on them. There's only one of each book, so these are extremely rare, one-of-a-kind items.

The contest will run weekly for 7 weeks, and cover the first 6 books in the Alien series and Alexander Outland: Space Pirate by G.J. Koch.

The contest for the Alien Proliferation edited galley will run from Tuesday, February 5, 2013 through Monday, February 11, 2013. Any contest entries received for AP after 2-11 will not qualify.

So, registered Hook Me Uppers!, answer this question: If you had to pick a name that wasn't your own, what's your favorite?

Love, Gini

LEGALESE
This is for Hook Me Up! subscribers only, so if you're not on, now's the time. Send an email with "Hook Me Up!" in the subject line to gini@ginikoch.com and I'll send you the rules to enter.

Contest will run weekly from Tuesday, January 15, 2013 through Monday, March 4, 2013 (TBAA runs 01-15-13 to 01-21-13; AT runs 01-22-13 to 01-28-13; AitF runs 01-29-13 to 02-04-13; AP runs 02-05-13 to 02-11-13; AD runs 02-12-13 to 02-18-13; AvA runs 02-19-13 to 02-25-13, and AO:SP runs 02-16-13 to 03-04-13). Each galley's contest will run for a week -- winners will be announced sometime in the week following each galley's  entry close. Winners will have until the following Sunday to check in -- any galley not claimed by then will be pulled back by the Gods of Random and a new winner(s) will be chosen.

This an international contest -- as long as you're on Planet Earth, you can enter and win. You must have a deliverable address, though - no P.O. boxes. Prize may take 2-4 weeks to ship; it may take 6-8 weeks for international or longer. Prizes will NOT ship until the final contest week close, on the off chance someone manages to win more than one galley (yes, it's possible, because, as we know, the Gods of Random are capricious).

Well, I wouldn't go with Dr. Swineberg, that's for sure. Already taken.

I've always had a weakness for the name Moritmer Snerd, but I suspect that Bergen's estate still has that one locked up. That means that I go with contestant number two: Flushmore Bowles.

I have always loved the name Sarah Elizabeth (I know, I know - I already have half of it, but I'm greedy). What can I say? I love old-fashioned names :-)

Hmmm still have that problem with names and finding a cute one or a funny one. However, I think Sydney is my all time fav. I would have loved it to be part of my name as it is my mothers, and grandads so I gave it to my daughter as her third name. We called her Amanda but in 9th grade she changed it to Sydney, which was funny as in 9th grade I went from the nick name Peggy to my given name Margaret.
Victoria and Elizabeth are tied for second. Not hard to tell I come from English roots lol

My favorite name is Sabriel (the character from the book SABRIEL by Garth Nix). I love that book series and think it just sounds like a cool name. :)

Wow, sorry for all those extra comments. That's what you get for trying to secretly comment on your smartphone at work: stupid phone posted my comment 3 times!!
Seriously: it is my phones fault. it wasn't a nefarious plan to get more entries. really!

It's a basic name for me. It's always been Jennifer. If I went off the norm it would be Nyx. I just love the sound :).

@Margaret in [you know where, right?] - My youngest also has three names, but it wasn't my doing. My wife, God bless her, was never much at making decisions. She knew what she wanted for his middle name, but couldn't decide on a first name. She finally got it down to either [choice1] Brian [choice2], or [choice2] Brian [choice1]. The former won out. He pretends that he only has one middle name, but his birth certificate has the whole collection!

I always wanted a name that could be shortened to other names - there isn't a lot you can do with Sarah! I would have chosen something like Alexis (Alex, Al, Lex, Lexi) or Victoria (Vic, Vicky, Tori, Ria).

I have one of those names. My mom wanted something creative for my first so I got saddled with a name no one could get right and half the time Iwas called a vegetable. The she had to give me the first, middle and last names of one of her grandmothers for my midde name. It really bothered me as a kid. Now I don't care if you say my name righ or wrong. If you say it wrong I just don't know to respond. And the middle names are long but I love my greatgrandma. If I could choose my own it woul have been Elodie or Menolly.

** knock knock **

Yoo hoo...anybody out there??

**muttering** What a bunch of stiffs. Everyone's being so polite to each other I'm gonna need an emesis basin.

**still muttering** How am I gonna get my jollies being mean to people when everyone's being so freakin' NICE??

February 6, 2013 at 7:19 PM
Blogger ratkin said...

**muttering yet again** Nice? Was I deluded enough to say "nice"? These people all crawled off into a corner and died there! The Home's got more energy on Bingo day than these stiffs!

I need a drink. Time for a swig of the old medical-alcohol-and-Kool-Aid combo in the employee's break room!

Blogger ratkin said...

Okay, okay...So the medical-alcohol-and-Kool-Aid combo wasn't such a good idea, after all. Someone forgot to tell the bozos on the staff that using RUBBING alcohol is a bad idea. Uuurp.

SOMEBODY help me! I need a trash-talking fix!!

On the other hand, if you all want to sit around gazing at your navels, I'll be happy to sit here and crank out dumb postings, increasing my chances at scarfing up the prize.

Your choice.

@ ratkin - you're just hoping we all curled up and died so that if any of us win we won't be around to claim our prize & you'll get a better shot at it! I hate to be the bearer of bad news but I'm still alive and kicking.

Obviously the poison I sent round somehow missed you though *plots to get rid of the remaining competition* LOL

When I has in the 7th grade I went by the name "Mike". I signed all my papers that way. I do not know why my teachers humored me. My first name is Carolyn.

Well, I kind of hated my first name Rachael most of my childhood because it wasn't any good for shortening to something cute, however, I always wished someone besides my mom when she's mad would call me Lilian! Luckily my weirdo friend took up calling me Red and I love it lol
If I chose my own name it would probably be either Maeve or Coraline, my possible future daughter's name lol.

I would also seriously consider Andromeda or Persephone.

Blogger ratkin said...

@HelloTofu19 - I always hated it, back in school, that three other kids had the same first name I did. We all had to be known by our first name and the first letter of our last name. As a result, if we went back for seconds my next choice would be Aloysius Dinglebender. At least I'd be the only one!

@Sarah - "Curled up and died" is a terribly insensitive thing to say to a resident of The Home, since that is the implied first item on the Activity Board every morning, around here!

February 8, 2013 at 7:36 AM
Blogger ratkin said...

@Sarah (again) - I should also mention that slipping poison in the food around here is a total waste of time. There's been a rumor for a while that the kitchen at The Home was built on a toxic waste dump, so they can just scoop some out and heat it up in time for dinner. We probably thought the poison was just some new spicy sauce they "dug up."

The name i'd pick for myself is my steampunk character name, Countess Chaos.
Part of me already feels that's who I am, so I think it would be fitting to have that name for real. :)

@Jesse - "Loved"? Zsa Zsa is still a going concern (at least technically). She, or someone representing her, "celebrated" her 96th birthday just the other day!
