Tidy My Office: Alien in the Family

HOOK ME UP! EXCLUSIVE CONTEST

TIDY MY OFFICE!
WEEK THREE: Alien in the Family

It's time to tidy my office, and I need filing space. To that end, I'm giving away my edited galleys -- the hard copies that have my scribbles on them. There's only one of each book, so these are extremely rare, one-of-a-kind items.

The contest will run weekly for 7 weeks, and cover the first 6 books in the Alien series and Alexander Outland: Space Pirate by G.J. Koch.

The contest for the Alien in the Family edited galley will run from Tuesday, January 29, 2013 through Monday, February 4, 2013. Any contest entries received for AITF after 02-04 will not qualify.

So, registered Hook Me Uppers!, answer this question: If you were gifted with a Poof, what would you name it?

Love, Gini

LEGALESE
This is for Hook Me Up! subscribers only, so if you're not on, now's the time. Send an email with "Hook Me Up!" in the subject line to gini@ginikoch.com and I'll send you the rules to enter.

Contest will run weekly from Tuesday, January 15, 2013 through Monday, March 4, 2013 (TBAA runs 01-15-13 to 01-21-13; AT runs 01-22-13 to 01-28-13; AitF runs 01-29-13 to 02-04-13; AP runs 02-05-13 to 02-11-13; AD runs 02-12-13 to 02-18-13; AvA runs 02-19-13 to 02-25-13, and AO:SP runs 02-16-13 to 03-04-13). Each galley's contest will run for a week -- winners will be announced sometime in the week following each galley's entry close. Winners will have until the following Sunday to check in -- any galley not claimed by then will be pulled back by the Gods of Random and a new winner(s) will be chosen.

This an international contest -- as long as you're on Planet Earth, you can enter and win. You must have a deliverable address, though - no P.O. boxes. Prize may take 2-4 weeks to ship; it may take 6-8 weeks for international or longer. Prizes will NOT ship until the final contest week close, on the off chance someone manages to win more than one galley (yes, it's possible, because, as we know, the Gods of Random are capricious).

...Well. Looks like I'm the fist one. This NEVER happens! ok, since I can't trall everybody's answers first, I'm going to say that I think I'd name my poof Wo Poof, as I had a toy when I was younger called wo puss. :P (pronounced woe)
I hope the GoR smile on me!

@Becky(continuing from last post). We totally would. It would be ridiculous. But incredibly awesome. [as long as no one was a serial killer XD)
academic library doesn't sound quite as fun as a normal library, but I'm still jealous. And just think of all the information you'd learn!

Hmmm... I've called pets after the A-team, after comic book characters or just gave them flower names like Buttercup, but a Poof.....

I think I'd call him Jawbreaker.

Hmmm, the official name would probably be something ridiculous like "Lady Fluffmeister Fuzzybottoms", but based on experience with cats I would end up actually calling it "Bunny" because everything small, cute and fuzzy eventually gets called that by me!

My proof would be named emerald as I love the colors of them. The proofs also remind me of them, emeralds are a soft stone but what you see is not what is always there.

hmmm names have never been easy for me.....when I was a wee girl my Dad told me we had an elf in our basement called Rapph. I would spend hours down there trying to find him..I never did. Given our Kitty has never seen the ppl that cook, clean and tidy for them I would call him Ralph.

Hiccup. It's a family joke. Can you picture a poof with the hiccups? Would each one cause them to grow, and then shrink? Think of the situations you could get in to with a hiccuping poof at the wrong time! And that is why I would name my poof Hiccup.

I'm gonna need a lot of Poofies in my life xD

@Jesse Yeah an epic party is always better if it doesn't include serial killers :)

Academic libraries (or at least the community college one that I work in) are kind of like a mix between a public and a school library. You really do end up learning a lot with some of the stuff you help people research or by seeing what people are asking questions about.

If I had a poof, I would name him Butch. It sound strong and dependable. Besides, it sounds cooler to yell attack Butch than to yell attack "my fluffy little furball"

...Or we could name one after Anonymous, up there, and call it Spammer!

[Just so you should know, I cleaned that up a good bit right before hitting Enter. Us old farts still at least have manners!]

Someone Up There Doesn't Like Me. Hard to believe, given my charm-laden personality, I know, but it's true. I have put in two posts multiple times, and they've both disappeared multiple times.

Here's my next attempt: I would name my poof Numbskull. It's name would be in honor of the Administrator of The Home!

I further suggested that we all get together (counter-intuitive during a contest as it might be) and vote to name a poof after Anonymous, 2 posts up from here. Here's a name: Spammer!

@Becky: yes, with serial killers a party can really go down hill as the people start disappearing and the bodies start showing up....XD
it still sounds really cool. And being able to suggest books to people... so nice!

@Olga: I agree with you there!

@Ratkin: Yes. Truly a shock.
but posts disappearing does suck. before I became *slightly* better with the internet, I too had this problem.

@ratkin, maybe the Gods of Random have turned against you and are making your posts disappear... :)

@Jesse, Yeah I love being able to suggest books for people and getting to make suggestions on what the library should buy (a lot of great YA and Fiction books got added to the library because of me :) )

@Jesse - Just so you should know, the words "people start disappearing and the bodies start showing up" describes everyday life (and otherwise) at The Home!

@Becky B - In that case, the GoR have picked the wrong guy to mess with! I've got nothing BUT time to mess with 'em right back. In the recreation area we have, as our options, "Annoying people via computer," "IV tubing Ring Toss," and "Bedpan Stacking contests." Which would you opt for?

@Jesse (again)- Not to brag, but my computer skills probably aren't the culprit, since I worked in the IT field for about 25 years. Sure, it was in the days of punch cards, but a quarter century is a quarter century. (It was logic exactly like that that qualified me as a programmer!)

@ratkin, wow nice comparison between nursing homes and a serial killer at a party (you almost made me snort/laugh in a very quiet library). :)

Also I don't know but I think as long as the bed pans were clean then bedpan stacking contests might be fun for a little while at least. (well until they inevitably fall on someone and or the noise of them falling gives someone a heart attack.)

I thought of being clever and saying that I would name a Poof ginntonic (or gini for short), but then I realized that I can't name a Poof until I see it....it's very Poofness would inspire a name....

@Becky: Sometimes I try and suggest books to my friends (and by suggest I mean "push a book in their face while yelling YOU MUST READ THIS!")
for some reason, it rarely works...
But I'm glad that good books are getting into your library!

@Jesse - Jeez, sometimes being circumspect just doesn't pan out. The Home has a constantly changing cast of people who have maxed out on their four-score-and-seven. This isn't a residence, it's God's waiting room. You learn not to say things like, "Say, where's Jack this morning?" For those of us who can still see, seeing someone moving into Jack's room just has HINT written all over it!

@Jesse (again) - By the way, for some, OLD has "super-duper-experienced" as a synonym. I've played two generation's worth of Pick Up The Young Child. On the 'up' side, by the second generation you don't have to play 'What disgusting sight and smell is waiting inside this diaper,' since Generation One is in charge of that part. On the 'down' side, Generation One gets even by picking The Home!

The first thing that came to mind, which seems to be the way all the poofs are named, is Brickly. So that's probably what I'd name my poof.

@Mariann Asanuma - Not to be picky or anything, but it would seem to me that Brickly would be great name if - and only if - your poof was hard, rectangular and reddish brown. But that's just me.
